Which 9 chords are the best?

Started Nov 7, 2012 0 Replies

I've got hold of an old Autoharp, I'm hoping my lovely but so far unmusical wife may take to it and that we can play some simple tunes together. The harp has 9 chord bars and I am planning to refelt…Continue

Thinking about an Irish session near Whitley Bay

I'd love to be able to go to a weekly Irish session near where I live, but there isn't one, so I'm thinking of starting one. I'd like it to be mostly traditional Irish music on the traditional…Continue

Anticipating the beat

Hi,I was listening to a recording of our session, and I noticed that from time to time I play the first note of a part slightly ahead of the other musicians. It sounds ok to me, and I think maybe it adds a tiny bit of excitement, but I'm wondering if it is considered bad form in traditional music circles.See More

I've got hold of an old Autoharp, I'm hoping my lovely but so far unmusical wife may take to it and that we can play some simple tunes together. The harp has 9 chord bars and I am planning to refelt them, so I now need to (or can) choose the nine most useful chords. The strings are tuned to c, d, e, f, f sharp, g, a, b, so those are the available notes for the chords, but I could change the tuning if that would produce remarkable results.See More

Bernie replied to Dick Glasgow's discussion To thrash, or not to thrash ... that is the question!
"Hello Liam, Respectfully, I'd ask you to read what I wrote, carefully, before disagreeing. It's easy to strum accompaniment to simple pop songs on a guitar, it's easy to play "punk" style rhythm guitar. It's not easy to…"

Bernie replied to Dick Glasgow's discussion To thrash, or not to thrash ... that is the question!
"I think it's really difficult to play Irish music well on the guitar or the bouzouki, but (in general, with notable exceptions) the people who tend to choose these instruments are not the most musically adept, they gravitate to the guitar/zouk…"

Bernie replied to Dick Glasgow's discussion To thrash, or not to thrash ... that is the question!
"I assume some people thrash the bouzouki for the same reasons some people thrash the guitar. 1. Because you can. It's easy. 2. Because it's louder that way. 3. Because they think they should. I spoke to a guitarist recently who told me…"
