My background was rock guitar (since the 70s) until I started playing a plectrum banjo in 2004. An interest in the flute led me to the tin whistle, which led me to Irish music, which led me to switch flute types.
UPDATE - I have dropped the flute for serious playing due to finger joint issues on my right hand. I've found that GDAE instruments (banjo, fiddle and mandolin) were easy for me to pick up and that influenced my decision to drop the flute. I took bodhran lessons this past year and that has helped me understand Irish music rhythms better. I practice every day.
Welcome .I tried this earlier but it looks like it didn't go through (probably operator error), If you can make down to Frederick some Thursday night you'd be more than welcome, always looking for new players. http://tradconnect.com/page/north-america-sessions
