"to be honest the more i run through the tune, saliva gets caught on the reeds from my tongue being all over it. i've never had that problem when playing blues. it sounds much cleaner puckered, and i can use the jaw flick for faster movement.

I've used a metronome, and if you're looking to "play well with others", I'd recommend it. If you don't anticipate playing with others, as I don't, then timing isn't quite as much an issue and you can trust your internal meter a bit more. If you're used to other musicians, your sense of meter will guide you anyway.
