New group Connla display all the right ingredients on their debut E.P. Recorded and mixed at RedBox studios in Belfast by Cormac O’ Kane, it contains two pipe and flute driven instrumental tracks and two vocal tracks. Instrumentally they layer on pipes and flute to a strong guitar and bodhrán back beat with shifts in tempo breaking up tracks that extend to over 6 minutes. Included below is The Drunken Piper which is the last track on the E.P.

The vocal tracks however are the standout feature. The vocals by Ciara McCafferty on Saints and Sinners and the arrangement that supports it is beautifully handled, building as it does with pipes and flute. Garden Valley is a slower track that relies on the harp of Emer Mallon for its mellow and textured feel. Making full use of the range of instruments at their disposal to create interest across the 4 tracks, Connla show great promise. The other band members are Ciaran Carlin on flute and whistles, Conor Mallon on pipes and Paul Starrett on guitar. Impressive.
