Album Review : Pádraig Rynne's Notify & Pauline Scanlon

Ambient melodies, traditional compositions and groovy beats with layers of electronic sounds.  This is Pádraig Rynne, his band Notify and Pauline Scanlon at their experimental best. This time it’s more refined, more observed and with its traditional core more intact.  The Carrington Event opens the EP and is an instrumental inspired by a solar storm in 1859.  It’s a Rynne composition that mixes Breton and Irish music and is reminiscent of his earlier Guidewires work. Layering sonic soundscapes onto The Limerick Rake, a traditional song featuring Pauline Scanlon is lusciously handled and wrapped in a quilt of ghostly vocals harmonies.  Advanced Knowledge / The Right Of Way are two Rynne compositions, driven by concertina but this time the sonic subtlety of The Limerick Rake is abandoned for a full blown rock sound. Bog Braon closes out the EP and is a lullaby with Scanlon on vocals and the band under a ‘restraining order’.  Once again Rynne delivers an outstanding recording, and with the addition of Scanlon’s vocals they have opened up their work to a much wider audience.

The EP is available to stream: http://padraigrynne.com/NOTIFY+PAULINE and to buy from digital stores incl Bandcamp.
