Traditional Irish Music
Every now and again a delightful discovery from the past shows up on our desk. Fonnchaoi was recorded by Verena Commins and Julie Langan back in 2001 and was only recently revealed to us by a member of Tradconnect. Both musicians are part of the vibrant Galway music scene. This is without doubt an album I could play every day and never tire of, and I’m guessing that if we missed this the first time round then possibly many others did too. With that in mind, there may well be an argument for some traditional albums having a relaunch which would bring them back to public attention and give them a well-deserved new lease of life.
Fonnchaoi plays along at a beautiful pace with ever so subtle but supremely executed interchange between the instruments. Tune selection is great and on the link below there are extensive notes on the tunes played. As far as accordion and fiddle albums go, it conceivably beats all. I will personally write to Verena Commins and Julie Langan and ask them to consider having a relaunch soon. I care not that it was recorded in 2001 but I am very grateful that I eventually found it.
