Experiencing music and culture in Scartaglin, Kerry on 'World Fiddle Day' 20th May 2017

On Saturday 20th May 2017 the village of Scartaglin in County Kerry will once again celebrate World Fiddle Day with a series of events for lovers or fiddle and traditional music.

Scartaglen is a small rural village full of culture and traditions. It nestles on a small hill halfway between Castleisland and Ballydesmond and lies within the famous Sliabh Luachra region of Kerry.  

World fiddle day will allow you to experience the music, culture, tradition and community spirit of this world famous region as they celebrate the rich and ornate style of Sliabh Luachra Irish Traditional Music.

There will be sessions featuring local and visiting musicians, poetry readings, a photographic exhibition, a singing session, a fiddle concert and the iconic photograph of all fiddlers gathered at the statue of Pádraig O’Keeffe.

Tribute will be payed to the Seamus Creagh and Jackie Daly album of 1977, when all tunes from the record will be played in sequence in Lyon’s Bar. Jackie Daly will be the special guest at this session.

The concert will feature top class fiddle players, including Seán Keane from ‘The Chieftains’ who visited Denis Murphy in Lisheen in 1969. Seán will recount his memories from the visit.

Fiddlers from all over the world have congregated in Scartaglin for World Fiddle Day over the past few years with promise of experiencing music and culture that brings tradition to life.
