Traditional Irish Music
The Henry Girls from Donegal continue their journey through Gaelic Americana with this very accomplished recording called Louder than Words. Why we in Ireland are not producing more music of this quality is beyond me. We have been hijacked for too long with pale crossover country folk music that is lacking and therefore adds nothing. The emergence of The Henry Girls, I Draw Slow, Imelda May and others over the last decade is therefore a very welcome development that will hopefully continue. Yes they all borrow heavily from other genres but they are making it their own and finding something new and Irish about it. The Henry Girls have been making music for a long time and Louder Than Words cements their position as one of our best acts. It’s their fourth album and with their trademark tight vocal harmonies and superior musicianship, they deliver 10 outstanding tracks. The majority of the material comes from their own pen and has depth and authenticity both vocally and musically. When they venture into covers such as Reason to Believe by Bruce Springsteen they give it a fresh harmonic rendering. It’s not the easiest song to cover and indeed took some guts to undertake when there were easier options available. The Inishowen Gospel Choir helps them out on this and another very strong self composition called Home. The Henry Girls deserve more coverage and Louder Than Words should be heard by anyone who wants to experience how good the music in this country can be.
