The Long Hard Road by Tom McElvogue & Paddy Kerr

The Long Hard Road is a 2003 recording by Tradconnect member Tom McElvogue with Paddy Kerr providing backing on bouzouki, bass, guitar and bodhrán. Over the years a lot of rave reviews have been written about it. To say that it is a revelation of the most astounding type would be an understatement.  The album is simply gorgeous.  Tom approaches his playing on B flat, D, E flat and F flutes in a most laid back, melodic and entrancing fashion.  The range of flutes gives great variety and texture to the music.  The tracks are moderately paced with ornamentation that while complicated never distract from the melody.  The accompaniment by Paddy is equally tasty and  with rich intros to some of the tunes.  From old tunes to new compositions to solo pieces it is all here.

The best part of this is that you don't need my recommendation. On Tom's website www.tommcelvogue.com you can listen to a preview of all the tracks and you can decide for yourself.  It should be in everyone's collection, especially if you play flute. We have also previously raved on about Tom's website for the insight he gives on the recording, outtakes etc.  Have a read of that as well.  The way a website should be. Enjoy.
