Traditional Irish Music
We are delighted to announce that the winner of our Traditional Album of the Year for 2014 is the debut album by The Trí-Tones. They band are Conor Moriarty from Kilcummin on button accordion, Tara Breen from County Clare on fiddle and Stephen Rooney from County Down on guitar and vocals. We reviewed the album late last year and you can read the review here.
All three have been All Ireland champions at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann over the years. The albums energy and edginess comes from the imaginative arrangements they have devised and the overlay of what they call "pulsating rhythms". The sets are dominated by Rooney's guitar with the bass of support musicians Sean Óg Graham and James Blennerhasset giving it a very modern feel.
We spoke to Tara Breen who said. "We are absolutely delighted that our album has won album of the year. I think we are all still shocked really. We had hoped that we would get in the top 10 but never imagined to win it. We are over the moon, ecstatic. We would like to thank everyone that helped out in any way to make our album, especially Sean Óg Graham, James Blennerhassett, Jim Higgins, Ciara Mc Crickard who all featured on the album. And a specials thanks to our families and a very special thank you to Sean Ryan."
"The three of us have played together before so coming up with arrangements happened quite quickly and easily. We picked a few of our favourite tunes and tried to put our own stamp on them. We also tried to fit in a few new compositions."
"For the coming year we are delighted to have been asked to play at the Dayton festival in July. Playing in America was an aspiration for us and being asked to play there so soon is a dream. We are also playing some concerts in Castlewellan, County Down in June as well as concerts in Galway, Clare and Kerry etc."
So a big congrats to The Trí-Tones. The album will be given a slot on our home page for the rest of the year as well as at the top of our Album Review page, and we will follow up with a few more articles on the group as the year progresses.
