Ballydehob Traditional Music Festival 2013
The village of Ballydehob in West Cork can look forward to a bumper weekend of traditional Irish music, song, dance and entertainment as part of the 2013 Ballydehob Traditional Music Festival which will take place in the village next weekend from Fri, March 22nd - Sun, March 24th. Headlining this year’s festival line-up is one of Ireland’s finest traditional groups ‘The Raw Bar Collective’
Festivities open on Friday 22nd in Ballydehob Community Hall with the All-Star Festival Concert headlined by the Raw Bar Collective. Tickets are reasonably priced at €10 for adults and €5 for students. As well as topping the bill in the All-Star Gala Festival Concert, ‘The Raw Bar Collective’ will tutor at the festival workshops at 10am on Saturday morning, March 23rd in Scoil Bhríde. Early booking is advisable for all workshops as bookings have already been made by traditional music lovers from as far away as Germany and the UK.
Dave Sheridan, one of Ireland’s most respected musicians will host the fiddle workshops. Conál O’Gráda, having enjoyed the 2012 festival so much, returns again to tutor the flute workshop. Waterford native, Benny McCarthy, will tutor the button accordion workshops and Colm Murphy, the bodhrán workshops. Concertina workshops will be led by Caitlín Nic Gabhainn and traditional singing by TG4 Singer of the Year Nell Ní Chróinín. Caitlín Nic Gabhainn who has danced with Riverdance will tutor the Sean-nós Dancing workshop at 2.30pm in the Community Hall which always proves a popular feature of the festival programme.
A new initiative for this year’s festival is the Musician-in-Residence Programme. Dublin harpist, Oisín Morrison who was recently announced as the winner of 2013 Sean Ó Riada Gold Medal competition for his excellence on the harp as been selected as this year’s Musician-in-Residence. He will perform a recital in the intimate surroundings of Ballydehob Social Club starting at 5pm.
Saturday’s Festival session trail continues at 4pm with a trad session in the Sandboat Bar led by Eibhlís O’Sullivan and Maeve McSweeney and followed at 6pm by a trad session in Rosie’s Bar led by Andy O Connell and Friends. From 9.30pm, the Johnny Reidy Céilí Band will set feet tapping in Ballydehob Community Hall at the Festival Céilí, while traditional music will continue to fill the village pubs with sessions in Irish Whip, Rosie’s and O’Brien’s Bar.
On Sunday March 24th, visitors to the village will be most welcome to partake in a walking tour of the village and explore the surrounding scenery departing from the Irish Whip at 12.30pm. From 2-4pm, the streets of Ballydehob will ring to the sounds of Irish music with the festival Street Seisiún competition taking place on the village streets. The competition carries a total prize fund of €500 and all musicians are welcome to take part.
To celebrate 2013 being the year of The Gathering, celebrity Swimming Champion and Cork’s Rebel Week Gathering Ambassador Steve Redmond will lead a celebration of the Gathering at the Danno Mahony Statue at 3pm. All visitors to the festival will be especially acknowledged at this event.
The festival concludes on Sunday evening with a closing session in Rosie’s bar at 6pm featuring a host of local musicians including Ann Redmond, Ivan Camier, Noel Camier, Maria Cotter and many more.
