Theo Dorgan is a poet, novelist, prose writer, editor, essayist and translator. Among his recent publications are ‘Jason & The Argonauts’ (2014; a libretto); ‘Liberty Walks Naked’ (2015; translations from the French of the Syrian poet Maram al-Masri); ‘Foundation Stone: Towards a Constitution for a 21st Century Republic’ (2013, editor); and the novel ‘Making Way’ (2013). His most recent collections of poems include ‘Nine Bright Shiners’, which was awarded the Irish Times/Poetry Now Prize for best collection published in 2014, and ‘Orpheus’, a collection of poems published in 2018. He is a member of Aosdána.
Throughout his long career Cormac Juan Breatnach has played with artists as diverse as Elvis Costello, Vanessa Williams, Donal Lunny, Bernard Purdie and Susan McKeown. In 2018 Cormac collaborated with Daire Bracken and Martin Tourish to record his ‘Whistle Blower’ CD, performing his compositions live in 2019 with film and graphics.
Theo and Cormac have long shared an interest in the relationships between lyric poetry and traditional music. Mixing poems, tunes, compositions and conversation. Reflecting on the influence of Greece on Dorgan’s poems and of the Basque country on Breatnach’s music, they explore the cross-influences of the known and the unfamiliar.
