Handed Down Sat Dec 10. “Learning from the Master - Nicholas McAuliffe” presented by Dr Maire O Keeffe
Our final Handed Down presentation will be given by Dr Maire O Keeffe on Nicholas McAuliffe of Tullig Castleisland . Maire from Tralee but living in Kinvara Co Galway is regarded as one of Co Kerry’s best fiddle players and recieved a PhD from the University of Limerick . In the early nineties she presented radio programmes for RTE radio and has recorded several CDs.
As a former student of Nicholas McAuliffe , Maire will reminisce about going for lessons and learning not only the tunes but the history and provenance and all about who first recorded or played them . This is what Nichloas McAuliffe is renowned for , his knowledge of Traditional music ,it’s tunes and players is legendary and he has always been the man to go to for confirmation of facts about the tradition . Nicholas has been teaching music since 1970 and our guests on Dec 10 include some of his former pupils Emma O Leary Scartaglin and Padraig Buckley of Killarney . We will also hear some tunes composed by Nicholas and we also have his playing partner and wife Anne McAulliffe with friends Mary Crowley and John Connolly .
Our young musicians are from the Killarney School of Music .
We are delighted to welcome Eileen Sheehan Killarney but who was born and raised and went to school in Scartaglin . An acclaimed poet Eileen will recite some of her poems and this is a first for Handed Down .
Eileen has a poem included in the new best seller Best Loved Poems - Favourite Poems from the south of Ireland and we will have a raffle for a signed copy by its editor Gabriel Fitzmaurice and John Reidy who contributed some of his stunning photos to this hardback book which is a must for anyone to have this Xmas.
