Locally known as "music week", the South Sligo Summer School is a week long celebration of local Traditional Irish Music, Song and Dance. There's something for everyone, classes, ceilis, concerts and craic...
The South Sligo Summer School of Traditional Music, Song & Dance will take place in Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo from 13th to 19th July. The school draws dancers, musicians, students and lovers of Irish traditional music of all ages from every county in Ireland, and from every corner of the world to a small town in the North West of Ireland, an area steeped in traditional music. As well as the usual range of classes in various instruments (fiddle, flute, tinwhistle, button accordion, banjo, concertina, uilleann pipes, harp, bodhrán and traditional guitar), singing, dance (sean nós & sets), there are a host of events including; nightly Ceilis, Interactive Workshops in Composing, Masterclasses (fiddle, flute & concertina) a Mixed Instrument class for Adults & Interactive Talks on two of Sligo's most famous fiddle players, Michael Coleman and Fred Finn. This year we are delighted to be honouring renowned traditional musician and tutor since 2001 at the South Sligo Summer School, Anne Conroy Burke, at our annual tribute concert on Monday, 14th July in St. Attracta's Community School. Anne will be joined by friends and family on stage on the night. The town will be buzzing all week with lots of impromptu sessions and, new this year, a Farewell Open Air Session of Music, Song and Dance on the Square, on Saturday afternoon, bringing the 28th annual school to a rousing finish.
