Traditional Irish Music
So, the results are in and I was awarded a silver at the Midwest Fleadh Cheoil. Unfortunately I will not be able to test my progress against the best of the best at the All-Ireland in Mullingar because it was cancelled this year because of COVID.
I always find it interesting that often I learn the most from the competitions where I do not win.
The adjudicator this year was especially thoughtful. Her input will offer great guidance as I am immersing myself in the study of Irish traditional singing this year and have a teacher who truly understands that I am not trying to move the artform forward. I am sincerely working at erasing generations of modern influence.
I may never achieve the true Irish traditional sound that is worthy of awards. But the pursuit to truly respect what is really Irish is worthy in an of itself.
I wonder if we had more virtual fleadhs would the American learning curve be quicker?
I would love to hear about your own fleadh experience!

I run the other way from anything official! It is the antithesis of the roots of Irish music. The mere categorizing, comparing, oragnizing, committizing, and finally comerciallizing of the culture is an enormous miscalculation which will not be evident until after the morons have murdered the poor Irish thing.
