Traditional Irish Music
In generating more music and practice possibilities TradConnect is looking at the idea of creating a network of musicians in Dublin. This would consist of members that have the ability to meet up, play some music and start some sessions.
The approach we are taking to this is slightly different. Rather than getting involved in large session type groups we want to promote people meeting up and practicing in smaller groups with a select number of instruments. All members would be playing off a set list of tunes that are practiced and learned to a competent level. Its more like practicing as a band than as a session.
By getting together in small groups you have the advantage of being able to hear yourself, the ability to develop and learn with others and the focus of working on a clear set of tunes. It takes several months and great familiarity with tunes to get them to sound natural. In addition you are playing week in week out with the same people who all have the same goal. Eventually the music gets better and can be much more satisfying.
The number of these groups is unlimited and therefore the numbers of members is unlimited. You eventually end up with possibly 5,10 or more groups. If the music develops to a point where you have 2-3 hours under your belt you pick a pub and start your own session. If you are short of musicians on any night you can call on members from other groups to fill in, as everyone is working off the same set of tunes. A group can be set up on TradConnect to manage this. Several groups could come together to start an almighty session.
The toughest part of this process is getting members at about the right level. Too good you might get bored and not advanced enough and you might hold others back. As a minimum you would need to be able to play at session speed ( not 100mph ) and would need to have a good few tunes under your belt. You would also need to have good rythmn and appreciation for the music. It would be for members with the ability to develop into a good enough player given the opportunity to practice and develop with others. This is an ambitious undertaking but is very workable. It will happen slowly over time as the membership of TradConnect grows. All you need do is register your interest by posting below. After we have sufficient numbers we will start an online group to gather further ideas and see what can be done. Nothing ventured nothing gained. Lets see where we can take this. Post below if you are interested or have any observations or comments.
