Traditional Irish Music
In starting a site like TradConnect I have started to discover the huge benefits of online resources like OAIM and their ability to help and develop people learning traditional Irish music. Whilst there is no substitute for one to one tuition or attending classes where you can interact with others, the benefits of online resources should not be discounted.
I have recently started using the OAIM which I think offers great value. For a monthly subscription of €19.95 you get
At present they offer courses in most instruments including fiddle, flute, bouzouki, bodhran and others.
In looking at the fiddle, which is my chozen instrument, they offer two courses, fiddle basics and fleadh tunes for the fiddle. Each includes 12 lessons with a variety of tunes covered. Each tune is broken down into about eight sections with the tune played first in it's entirety, then broken down into parts A and B, played slowly, and then finished off with ornamentation.
For anyone learning this offers a great opportunity to look at the tunes, replay them, add some ornamentation etc. In addition to your chozen instrument you also have access to other instruments so if you have kids learning they also have access. I must say I have really enjoyed going through the fiddle lessons.
Unlike some other sites you can cancel at any time and renew again. By simply registering you can also get one free lesson to see if it something that you will make use of.
As with most things it comes down to being in a position to have the time to go online and make use of the resourse and sticking at it for a period of time. In my view the return for the money spent has to be worth it. A months access for €19.95 is the equivalent of a few beers in the pub, a half hour one to one with a teacher or a couple of CD's. So with Christmas coming up it could be a good and different present.
So worth checking out if you want to progress. More courses will be added with time from what I understand.
