I have been trying to tidy up the links section of this site as it was a bit of a mess there for a while. Just about completed the Artists section.

However when I start to look at instrument makers I seem to be lacking in names. Not having changed my fiddle since I bought it in the late '80's I can't even tell you who are our master fiddle makers are ( ignoring the fact that many are old or traded ones) Sinful I know.

So in order to build up our links in this section who are our master craftsmen when it comes to instruments.

Lets cover everything from Fiddles, Flute, Harps, Whistles, etc. Provide a link if you have the time to root it out. Might also be worth splitting them between Ireland,  US, UK, Europe

Ok, i will contribute with what i know (of) and play myself..

Bodhrán:

Eamon Maguire - 18 inch non tunable, thin goat skin

Brendan White - 18 inch tunable, thick goat skin (ordered as a "Colm Murphy replica" felt like plywood when i got it, but it is sounding better and better!

Seamus O'Kane - 15,5 inch tunable, Seamus new patented one screw tensioner system, lambeg goat skin.

Flute:
Sam Murray
- gorgeous slender flute with fantastic sound and intonation.

Rob Forbes - Delrin flute, Pratten-esque short foot with very clever tenon/tuning slide design, amazing value for money!

Tin whistle:

Ian Turnbull / iMpempe - I have all keys from soprano Bb to E they're all gorgeous, both looks and sound-wise. I can't imagine there are better whistles anywhere near Ians price.

Honorable mention/s to Michael Burke at least if the soprano brass D i played briefly is anything to go by. John Sindt, ditto and last but not least, when it comes to A and down to low D IMO there's no way around Colin Goldie

Hi Tony

A few worthy of mention down here in Mayo are Kevin Sykes fiddle maker who is based in Ballyvary (near Castlebar) http://www.kevinsykes.com/ and Brian Lofthouse mandolin-maker based near Turlough http://www.ccoi.ie/index.php?option=com_staticxt&staticfile=det....
Keep an eye out for nationwide in the coming days, there should be a feature on Kevin Sykes and about a year ago Brian was featured on the same programme.

Bernard

We have of  course the great Martin Connolly in Ennis making the renowned Kincora button accordions, Michael Searson who makes the Cairdín boxes in Offaly, Paddy Clancy who makes his own boxes also.

Rab Cherry originally from Belfast made my fiddle back in 1985 and I love it. He used to be based in Belfast but I think he is now based in Dublin. he has made lots of fiddles for traditional musicians. Paul Bradley makes fiddles in Galway while Eugene Lambe makes uilleann pipes and concert flutes in Kinvara in Galway

You might want to try this Yorkshireman for Uilleann Pipes & Low Whistles. I've known Brian for more years than I care to remember. Probably more than he cares to remember as well !!! He makes some truly wonderful instruments.
