Traditional Irish Music
Katie Geringer began studying the violin at the age of 6 and developed an interest in Irish and folk music while in high school. She remained active in the folk and Irish music scene in Tallahassee, Florida while simultaneously earning a bachelor’s degree in Instrumental Music Education and a Certificate in Violin Performance as well as teaching middle orchestra for three years.
Her musical versatility is demonstrated each summer as a staff member of the Florida State University Summer Music Camps where she leads the advanced fiddle ensemble and coaches violin sectionals and chamber music.
Her passion for Irish music led her to earn a masters degree with First Class Honors in Irish Traditional Music Performance at the University of Limerick in Ireland in 2014/15. While at UL, she regularly played in sessions in southwest Ireland and studied with Siobhan Peoples and Eileen O’Brien as well as many other notable Irish musicians. In 2015, she received 1st Place in the Senior Division of the Limerick County Fleadh.
She now lives Houston, Texas and considers her greatest influences to be Liz Carroll, Martin Hayes, and Brid Harper.
On her approach to teaching she said: “I love being a musician and especially playing traditional Irish music; it provides me with opportunities for self-expression and for making meaningful connections with others. Those opportunities, more than anything else, are what I hope to pass on to students.”
“I am happy to work on whatever area(s) the student has in mind but can also provide suggestions and a direction that we can go in. Lessons can include work on ornamentation, variations, chords, bowings/phrasing, and aspects of good playing technique like positioning, intonation, and tone production.
“Other areas that could be covered include practice techniques, aural listening skills (including learning tunes by ear), and practical music theory. I am a strong believer in listening to and absorbing the music as much as possible, even when your instrument is not in your hand. I think this can go a long way in developing your personal style and sound. While I do think that being able to pick up a melody by ear is very important, I want to consider the learning style of the student and would like to come up with a plan that enables them to learn efficiently.”
Lessons are available for complete beginners, beginning, intermediate, and advanced players. Katie says that she enjoys working with all ages, and has taught students from age 4 to 65. Lesson times can vary from 30, 45, or 60 minutes in length.
“I am open to doing one-off lessons, but feel that in order for the student to benefit the most, it’s best to meet regularly so there’s the chance to practice and incorporate the material and then return to build on the technique or idea. I understand that schedules can be hectic sometimes and am willing to work out a schedule that works for the student.”
