Gráinne & Brendan launch 'Songs from Ireland'
'Songs from Ireland' is a new Irish folk project and record from contemporary folk singer Gráinne Hunt and award-winning guitarist Brendan Walsh. The album is a collection of traditional Irish ballads and folk songs in both English and Irish, carefully arranged by Brendan to give a modern new feel to beautiful old songs.
Gráinne and Brendan met in 2000 when they both attended NUI Maynooth, completing the BA (Music) together there. Brendan completed his degree with an Erasmus year in Lemmensinstitute, Leuven, Belgium. He then undertook two separate Masters in Music Performance at Dublin Institute of Technology and from the Hochschule Luzern – Musik, Switzerland where he also undertook the specialized course C.A.S. (Certificate of advanced studies). He is a two time All Ireland ‘Feis Ceol’ competition winner including the George Lowden Bach Prize and has performed for the Irish president and played for Switzerland’s leading political figures in the Bundeshaus in Bern (Switzerland’s Dáil Éireann). Grainne’s path was quite different, playing in small Irish bands until she met Mark Geary in 2012 and began touring as a vocalist in Europe and the US. She released a solo record in 2015 and will release another, recorded in Nashville in September 2019. She is better known perhaps for sharing the stage with Glen Hansard and her voice has been compared to Tracy Chapman, Mary Black and Nathalie Merchant.
In early 2018 they joined forces to perform at Shannonside Winter Music Festival and from there, Songs from Ireland was born.
Recorded in Soundville Studios, Luzern, Switzerland, the 13 tracks include Raglan Road, Trasna na dTonnta, Song for Ireland and Mo Ghile Mear. 'Songs from Ireland' will be released on 4th April, and single Trasna na dTonnta will be with radio stations for Seachtain na Gaeilge
