40 Players of the Irish Tenor Banjo!

Of course there is not, nor never could be, a Best Player, but my own personal favourite player is John Carty, but there are so many different styles used in the playing of the Tenor Banjo in Irish music, that everyone has their own favourite.

So here's a list of some of the most popular Tenor Banjo players today, with links to a video of their playing, so perhaps they can help you decide who your favourite player is.

Of course there are lots more, so if you'd like to see your own favourite player's video, or indeed your own video added to this list, then just post the link & details in the Comments Box below & I'll be happy to add it.

P.S. Don't forget to check out our 96 Irish Tenor Banjo Links!

i would have to agree with dick i mean its not worth spending big money oviously if ur not sure ur goin to take to it so i would recommend gettin a loan of one. if u do want to buy one though u may get a reasonable vintage banjo for a good price with a nice tone as generally vintage banjos do. like i have an old countryman  banjo which was my first and still have wen i began to get serious i got a clareen special and just last week i got the clareen elite unbelievable instrument. but the best piece of advice i could give to you is pay tom cussen a visit he is a gentleman and will give u a great idea what to do

Yes Dick, Angelina would be in my top 3 or 4 as well. Cathal Hayden as well.

Hi Tony. Dave Sheridan usually has his hands on instruments to sell so I'd say there's a good chance of him having a banjo.Worth dropping him an email. Will get his address on  He'll point you in the right direction if not.

Hi Tony, as with most instruments, really cheap usually means really crap, so it may be hard to tune &/or to keep in tune, may not be as easy to play as a better quality instrument & of course the real killer ... it'll probably sound crap!

This is especially true for someone like yourself who already plays & knows what the music should sound like.

So instead of buying a cheap, rubbish Banjo, why not ask around amongst your own friends, or your new friends on here, who may live locally. Most Banjo players tend to have more than one instrument, so you may well find someone nearby who'll be happy enough to let you have a thrash on their 2nd or 3rd Banjo for a few weeks.

As you say yourself, you don't know yet if you'll actually take to it, so my advice would be to just get one on loan for a while.

Then, if you do really take to it & are sure you really do want to step over into the Dark Side ... you won't be stuck with a cheap turkey that nobody wants & you can then invest in a good one.

Oh yes & eh ...... Good Luck. :-)

I'm looking for a really cheap banjo, as a try out, to see if I take to it. Is there any such thing as cheap, will get you going, and dosen't sound too bad banjo. Online, offline where ever. Point me in the right direction as I know very little about banjo's.

Ah Donal & Brian, you clearly have great taste in Banjo playing & players.

I know this because, of course, John, Brian & Angelina would be my top 3 favourite players.
