Whistlin' high and low

A place to discuss whistles, their makers and performers/performance. Anything whistle related is ok, keep in mind that opinions could vary in the extreme without one being more worth per se than the other, so keep it nice and polite.

Tweaks and tips

I'll start off with a tweaking tip for Clarke whistles. This one's good as a stock Clarke nearly makes you keel over dead after the first tune. After this tweak, the air requirement is down like 200% and the sound and intonation is still the…Continue

I have Book 1 and its great!! Though I've played now for two years and am going back to the beginning, her teaching is so much more thorough than found in other tutors (I count Grey Larsen's book more as a reference book) so am picking up new stuff all the time. PLUS

buying a book enrolls you in her on-line "club" which will give access to more teaching, tutorials, masterclasses etc once she gets that up and running. Fantastic!

About a week ago, I attended a house concert given by Mary Bergin. Mary graced those in attendance with about two hours of masterful musicianship as she played a variety of jigs, reels, hornpipes, airs, and a few of her own compositions. Mary Bergin is truly an international treasure as a proponent of Irish Traditional Music
and her emotive playing of whistle is a gift to the world.

Mary has recently released the first two volumes of her whistle tutorial which will be comprised of a three volume set. Mary informed us that volume three is well on it's way to completion
and will be released in the not too distant future.

Those who aspire to play whistle or current players wishing to improve their level of play would do well to consider aquiring the Mary Bergin Whistle Tutorial as an incredible resource of whistle
instruction. I believe the tutorial is available at and Amazon.

Hi John! Well, there are a lot of options out there , depending on what you prefer. I recommend checking out some of the threads in this group. Lately there has been a lot of talk on here about a maker located in your country, Marc Löfgren, who, in my opinion makes some very fine whistles. I am very impressed by the low G I recently got, which he made. They look similar to a chieftian NR, but I've never played a Chieftain, so I can't say how similar they actually are. It seems you've made a good choice going for the bluebird, it's also a very fine whistle and a great choice. Are you looking for another low D, or other low keys? The Reviol low D is my personal favourite low D whistle. However, Goldie/Overton, MK, and Burke are also very good low whistles, though I can't say if any would be similar to a Chieftain.  It really all depends on what type of sound and playability you are looking for.

Hi there . i recently bought a Jerry Freeman Bluebird and a Chieftain Nr low D, and found out that they are very easy to play and all the squeqiness is gone allthough i am just a beginner with 10 months of whistling, i feel that the quality of the whistles made me play better than ever , i would be more than happy for some tips of similar whistles especially low whistles.

J.D. Lemonhead,
Thanks for the update. I was not sure if the system just crashed and burned or what might have happened. It is sad that this is happeningmas it is a great site and so many of us communicate with our fellow musicians on C & F. Like many others, I am hopeful that the site is restored soon.

From Dale ChiffnFipple owner via Facebook

I want to apologize to everyone for the lengthy outages, semi-outages, and glacial pace of the board when it does operate. As this most recent problem was developing, I was in the process of leaving town to meet my new grandson, and I'm still there. I don't think I could solve the problem if I was home, but at least I could be trying. The chronic problem, as I understand it, is our large database, which needs serious maintenance work. We've not been able to locate anyone with the expertise to help us. We have considered moving the board to a hosting service that offers more of that kind of support, but that's a huge undertaking as well. I've asked Rich, who ran the tech side of the board for a long time, to help, but he doubts he has the time or interest. I'm considering starting a new board, with a clean database, on another hosting service, but the problems with that are obvious. In any case, I've very sorry that this has happened.

Anyone know what is going on with the Chiff & Fipple site? When it might be back online? It has been days since I have been able to access it. I am sure many are wondering what is goingnon.

Checked this morning and the Chiff & Fipple site is still down. Going through a bit o' withdrawl having little communication with my mates on that forum over the last day. I am also perhaps losing out on some whistle deals I was interested in. Computer problems really are the pits.

Apparently it's been up & down all day. Dale posted on the C&F facebook page that the hosting company says they're fixing some hardware issues.
