Just found your question........

Is a made-to-measure Domhnal na Gruen Aluminium Low D whistle @ £58 as good as Chieftain Pro Alumenium Low D @ £165....Double the price.

If there is a difference what is it.....Cheers Calum

Well, I'll start with a swerve - I don't do low whistles. Speaking from experience of the high ones, the money you pay has little to do with it. You can get good instruments at the cheap end but its a lottery. Quality control is so dire that they can vary a lot even from the same box!!

Added to that, we all have different tastes and perceptions so there is no univerally "right" whislte.

Just to complicate things further, I have this theory that you may want different whistles for different tunes. So that you can get the most out of the individual tonal qualities that each has to offer.I certainly have one for airs (Burke) and one for dance music (Feadog)

There you go, thats made it no better for you at all has it ?

Hi Calum,

Well, the whistle in "The Harleqiun" is a Clare 2 piece brass - from Ebay! - modified with blu tack.

The other recordings I've done on here are done with my trusty (or is that rusty?) old Feadog - 25 years old and they don't make them like that anymore. The mouth piece design has changed at least twice since then. It's also had the blu tack modification.

I have just bought a Burke brass session whistle that I'm raving about. Lots of money but a fine instrument. I reviewed it for the whistle group on here.

Thanks for you kind comment on my go at "The Harlequin". The dots / ABC's are on and I first heard it on a Liam O'Flynn album - "Out to another side".

Hope that has helped,
