B/C accordion (Hohner Double Ray)

Intermediate Level 1 (1-5 years)

Started playing button accordion in 1999 in preparation for doing research on music in Northeast Brazil. Studied forró and choro with button accordionist Arlindo dos Oito Baixos (that's him on the right in my profile photo in 2001) while living in Recife for a year in 2000-2001. Wrote about this style in Music in Brazil (Oxford UP 2006) and on my blog.

Have been listening to Irish music for a long time. Was motivated to learn more tunes and attend sessions when I learned of the Dallas Slow Sessions hosted by Jim Wells two months ago. Enjoying learning tunes by ear and from notation. Hope to attend O'Flaherty retreat in 2013.

Professional saxophonist; professor and chair of the Division of Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas.
