I think I might go this route and do some homemade upgrading like you did with your son's drum. I don't want to spend too much money on something for camping. I guess I could always use a pizza box or, as one of the other members suggested, the plastic lid of a cookie jar. But I like the idea of something more closely resembling a bodhran.
