Bazuki Joe Meets Ivercoe - Mike Considine

This is pretty good music from Mike Considine and should appeal to all you bouzouki and tenor banjo players out there.  Have a listen to the tracks on his website as well.  Ingenious stuff that is very polished indeed.  Don't know why we haven't come across his name before, but now that we have we will have to explore a bit more.

Now based in…

Album Review - Nights in Shanaglish

Nights in Shanaglish continues a recent trend of live recordings that take place in non studio environments such as kitchens, churches and village halls.  Ideas that have germinated in the minds of musicians over a quiet pint or phone conversation finally take shape and come to fruition.  This is one such idea, and what an inspired one…

University College Cork Trad Society - Tune Book

There is an interesting development from UCC Trad Society Cork, both on their website and on Soundcloud whereby they are compiling a tune book.  They have uploaded a number of tracks played slowly the first time around, with an increase in tempo second time around. The UCC TradSoc is dedicated to the promotion of Irish Traditional Music in UCC and Cork City and is for…

Colm Gannon - Tunes from his new solo album

Another great accordion master that we have also recently reviewed here on Tradconnect.  Colm Gannon features on the track below giving his rendition of Maud Millar's and George Whites Favourite.  In overall terms it has been a great year for accordion albums and this is most definitely in the pick of the bunch.  The track below is from the album called The Rights of Man. …

Temple Bar Trad Fest starting next week

The Temple Bar Trad Fest offers an oasis of traditional music in the midst of what could be a bleak mid winter.  Its the first festival of the new year and it is in the heart of the capital.  It has grown in every way possible since its inception in 2005 and has one of the strongest line ups in years.  Grant it, last year they had the…

Kieran Munnelly - Green Grows The Laurel

We will have to admit we don't know a lot about the music of Kieran Munnelly but it is definitely on our list of "things to get up to speed with".  This is nice.  Just loaded onto Soundcloud. If you are reading this Kieran maybe…

More Moxie Music

We have added in some different sound files to this blog.  All worth a listen to because this is one inventive group with a very creative take on traditional music.  May not be for the purists but it is definitely great to see young guys like these taking us to some new places.

Formed in late 2011 as part of the annual folk festival, Sligo Live, they are a Sligo and Limerick based band that…

The Kíla World tour of Dublin

When it comes to longevity in the Irish music industry there are not many bands that can match Kíla.  With a twenty year history, nine albums and live shows that have become legendary, it's little wonder that the appetite for their music remains strong.  Constantly evolving…

Album Review - Eamonn Cotter / The Knotted Chord

The purity of a tune well played, the clarity and distinction of the music, flowing with effortless ease in the hands of an "unsung hero. It's a pleasure to behold and in traditional terms you won't get more traditional.  Authentic in its interpretation of the tunes and stripped bare enough to know that the musician is centre…

Album Review - Doma Beo

Liam Doherty, Laura Doherty and Maria Matthews have moved on from their time with Ríl Og and have formed a new group called Doma Beo.  They have wasted no time in getting back into the studio to record an album.  Seeing teenagers aged from 13 to 16 bringing out an album must be a fairly rare event. Liam ( banjo and guitar ), Laura ( fiddle,…

We need more Jimmy Keane in the world.

We came across this great little tune called Gweneen by Chicago's own irrepressible piano accordion maestro Jimmy Keane. Don't know much about its origins but it is most definitely beautiful. "Many regard Keane as the premier exponent of traditional Irish music on the piano…
