Album review - At First Light / Idir

At First Light are back in fine form with their second album Idir, released close to six years after their debut release.

The band was established in 2001 when ‘Lúnasa’ founders John McSherry and Michael McGoldrick released their critically acclaimed collaborative album, ‘At First Light’. The line up has changed since then with the addition of Uilleann piper and bodhrán…

We wanted to post up a lovely jig composed by a fine musician called Wilbur "Two Gun" Terry from Virginia USA. It was kindly sent to us by our friend and fellow tradconnector Charlie Pitchard. We hope you like it. It is called Two Gun's Jig.…

The Saturday slow session at the New York Irish Center in Long Island City

This from Riyaz Shaikh reporting on the Saturday slow session at the New York Irish Center in Long Island City:

Hi folks,

We had a good session last saturday, with a surprisingly big turnout (even though the 7 train wasnt running). There were some familiar faces and munchies as well (almost seemed like the monthly CCE sunday session they have downstairs).

There's been a good mix of beginner and experienced…

Two Donegal Highland's

This video was submitted by Jim McAuley and I have added them as a blog because on TradConnect we are trying to keep the video library to videos only. Its one of the few rules we have on the site and we hope members will understand our reasoning. This is music to a slide show and a lovely tune that needs to be shared.

Crazy Chicken Fiddle, as a way of thanking you all.

To thank you for showcasing a lowly american fiddler here on tradconnect, I present:

This fiddler is Lisa Haley, and when she's not singing like a chicken, she plays Cajun and Zydeco music with the Zydecats.

Collaboration

We were delighted last weekend to do an online collaboration with the fine fiddle player and composer from Co Antrim, Jim McAuley.

We were humbled when he composed a tune in our name as Jim has been a great source of inspiration to musicians everywhere and we regard him very highly.

We hope that you enjoy the tunes.

Copenhagen Irish festival

Went there yesterday, wanted to catch Andy Irvine and Dónal Lunny, which i indeed did *see below*

great concert, great to hear a lot of the 'old ones' again, and both Andy and Dónal are still cracking performers!

Had a nice session as well as the biggest chicken & bacon sandwich i have seen, let alone eaten in my life!

Kudos to the artists and to the hard working 'crew' who make it…

Christmas Celtic getting under way in Boston

A Christmas Celtic Sojourn is a concert series we started in Boston 8 years ago.  It has since grown to five cities and 10 shows!    While I produce it, I really feel it is like a hooley, a gathering with great musicians and singers and in turn, the audience.   Take a look at this video for example.

Two young dancers from the Harney Academy here (headed by the well-known Liam Harney).  They are joined by Caitlin nic Gabhann herself an outstanding dancer and the star of last year's…

CD launch

Back home after the CD-launch at The Abbey Tavern in Howth, Co Dublin.
Good turnout even if Tuesday wouldn't have been my first choice for a launch.... So we did a second launch at the Teachers Club, a nice concert (and session afterwards) there too. :-D

Right now I'm sending out CD's all over, have quite a few orders to take care of. If anybody's interested send your address to:

info@peterhedlund.com and I'll reply with an account number and a CD.

Cheers.

New Manhattan Upper West Side session

This from Caitlin Warbelow:

I'll be running a new session on the upper west side of Manhattan starting next Thursday (November 10th).  It will be at a pub called Soldier McGee's (83rd and Amsterdam) and will run from 9pm-12am.  The level of the session will be advanced, but I encourage you all to come out to listen and also sit down for a tune if you'd like to!  I will be having different leaders each week (i.e., I will not be there every week), so you'll get to hear a…

How Long Has It Been?

Can't believe the year is almost over. Halloween was a blast. I enjoyed it a lot. Traditional music was fun too. I am currently listening to the album of the Celtic tenors called Feels Like Home. It's beautiful. If you love Anuna, Celtic Thunder and Gregorian then you will love this new album.

It is too soon to make New Years resolution but I…

A weekend on tour.

Well.. maybe tour is stretching it some, but two pub gigs anyway, friday and saturday, with the band 'Cuts and crans' we had a good time and some good music although the audience failed to show last night. It escapes me how/why the owner had us start so early?! By the time we'd done our three sets and started packing, the people began coming in in numbers.. Oh well..

Here's a clip featuring T.C. member Hasse Ljungdahl (thanks for the lodging btw) playing 'The snowy breasted…

Tara Breen - All Ireland Fiddle Champion 2011

Its worth celebrating our traditional Irish music champions. Tara Breen won the All Ireland in 2011. Here we have a selection of tunes from Tara who has won All-Ireland honours on several instruments. Tara plays a hornpipe, "The Second Star" learned from the playing of Dessie Donnelly, followed by two reels: "Paddy Ryan's Dream" and "President Garfield's", which she learned from the playing of fiddle player Máire O'Keefe.
