Australian trad music alive with Sásta

When it comes to Australian trad bands there are not that many that spring to mind. Sásta seem to be correcting that situation.  We have just recently come across their debut album, also called Sásta and the strong background to their members shows why the quality of their music is so high. The band consists of

Mick Hughes
on guitar, bodhrán and bouzouki. Mick is London Irish and his family hail from Co.Laois and Co.Armagh. He earned his stripes in the trad sessions of London and then Dublin, where he lived for many years. He has played his music across Europe, Australia, New Zealand and America.

Tommy Donovan ( Banjo/Mandolin ) was born in Ballylongford Co. Kerry and has been playing music since the age of 6. He was taught by box player Willie Larkin from Templeglantine, West Limerick. He was a member of the Ballydonaghue/Lisselton Comhaltas branch, winning All Ireland Senior Grupai Cheoil and Under 18 Ceili Bands in 1999. Tommy also won Munster titles on both mandolin and banjo. He has travelled all over Ireland playing music as well as London, America, New Zealand and Australia.

Joe Murray ( fiddle and cousin of Eamon Murray-Beoga ) was born in Toomebridge, Co. Antrim and has been playing music since the age of eight. He began teaching at the age of fourteen and was a member of Crosskeys Comhaltas Group, where he won two All Irelands in Grupai Cheoil and Ceili Band. Joe has also won twice at the Ulster Fleadh on fiddle. He has travelled extensively playing his music in America, Australia and throughout Europe.

Rocky Towey ( accordion ) grew up in Kilmovee, Co. Mayo where he picked up the box aged nine and was taught by Marion Egan and his brother Johnny Towey. He has travelled all over Ireland and lived in the USA before coming to Australia with box never too far away.
