We are absolutely delighted that Patrick O'Donoghue and all his team at the The INEC Killarney have come on board with us for this award. Each year we run an end of year poll to pick the best album and it has proven to be hugely popular in highlighting all the great artists and albums. To get a festival and musician focused organisation, like The INEC Killarney, on board allows us to really give something back to the artists involved.”
The INEC Killarney runs two of the highest profile traditional music festivals in Ireland. The Gathering Festival takes place in February each year, followed by their new Folkfest which takes place in Killarney during the month of July.
Managing Director Patrick O’Donohue said “New albums are the lifeblood of trad music be they of new compositions or reworkings of ancient songs which might otherwise disappear. We are therefore delighted to sponsor this important award. We use events like Folkfest and The Gathering to showcase the very best in trad music and are keen to support this industry in any way we can.”
Tradconnect have been running this award since 2012 with previous winners including The Tri-Tones, Edel Fox & Neill Byrne and Caitlín Nic Gabhann. An end of year member poll combined with an independent judging panel is the basis for the selection of the winning album. The addition of this award further demonstrates Tradconnect’s ability to partner with major organisations in an artist focused manner. Tradconnect writes independent content that highlights the best new traditional music on release, whilst at the same time assisting artists when it comes to navigating the online world.
Established in 2011, Tradconnect has grown to become the most recognised website and online resource for traditional music, with over 6,000 members and in excess of 135,000 unique readers each year. They have previously partnered with Christy Moore for a Songwriter Showcase andPeadar Ó Riada and Tunes in the Church for a New Tune Showcase. In June this year they established a Download Centre on the site for radio broadcasters, allowing them to download newly released albums for free, with 70 broadcasters participating. This provides artists with immediate access to radio stations globally.
