Traditional Irish Music
The O' Flaherty Music Retreat will take place again on October 25th - 27th. In their press release they say that "If you play or sing Irish music or want to learn, then you could consider spending three relaxing days in a comfortable, scenic setting saturating yourself in Irish trad with a community of motivated students and teachers! On October 25-27, the tenth O’Flaherty Irish Music Retreat will be held at the Lakeview Camp & Conference Center near Waxahachie, Texas (just outside of Dallas). This is an event that has inspired thousands of musicians from all over the world and helped them improve their learning and playing of the music.
They have great variety of classes offered this year taught by an exceptional lineup of instructors including: bodhrán with Myron Bretholz; bouzouki with Pat Broaders; button accordion (B/C & C#/D) with Patty Furlong; anglo concertina with Florence Fahy; fiddle with Daire Bracken; fiddle – Liz Knowles; fiddle with Brendan Mulvihill; fiddle with Patrick Ourceau; basic fiddle with Laura Flanagan and Chris Buckley; flute with John Skelton; DADGAD guitar with Josh Dukes; guitar fundamentals with Jeff Moore; harp with Eileen Gannon; harp fundamentals with Rebekah Passmore ; mandolin with Marla Fibish; piano accordion with Jimmy Keane; singing with Cathie Ryan; tenor banjo – Kieran Hanrahan; tinwhistle/flute fundamentals with Jonathan Milton ; and uilleann pipes with Kierann O’Hare.
In addition to the regular classes, there will be enrichment classes and workshops about learning by ear, using ABC notation, Gaelic speaking and singing, reed making, session etiquette, Irish music history, music theory, practice tips and dancing. There will be ceilis on Friday and Saturday nights and group performances at every meal and instructor concerts each evening. A number of those performances during the day will be student ensembles competing in the “Texas Tune and Song Tussle” contest. At the end of the day, there will be lots of sessions at various levels and one for singing. There will also be booths selling all kinds of musical merchandise, instruments, apparel, CDs, etc.
Tuition for the retreat is $225 for adults and $135 for youth 11-18. For lodging, there are on-campus motel rooms, dorm beds, and RV spaces available ranging in price from $25 to $70 per night. Meals are $9 for breakfast and $10 for lunch or dinner. There is a shuttle service to and from Dallas/Fort Worth airport for $25 per trip.
