A journey into traditional music - Dan Possumato and friends have The Last Pint

This is a first listen to a track from the new album by Dan Possumato. We have covered Dan’s previous recordings on Tradconnect including Tunes Inside released back in 2014. For that recording, we said that his music was, “a reflection of community and friends and time spent in the inner recesses of the heart, just as much as the darkest corner of the pub.  It is also reflective of true session life and both the music and the songs have that quality to them.” The same applies to this recording with many friends joining him once again.

This is Track 1 from the album featuring The Twelve Pins and The View Across the Valley. The first tune is a composition by master fiddler, pianist and composer Charlie Lennon. He named the tune after a mountain range in Connemara. The second reel is a work by the late flute player and composer John Brady, and consequently, it is also known as Brady’s.

Dan was born on St. Patrick's Day in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In his biography he says: “I can clearly recollect my earliest birthday parties that featured harps and shamrocks on the cakes, going with my parents to watch the big parades downtown, and of course the Irish music that always filled the air. One year, I remember being much impressed by a float that had a ceili band seated on a flatbed truck, a jerry-rigged speaker system strapped on board. The crowd applauded loudly for them as they passed by, and I believe it was then that I first became interested in Irish traditional music.”

After listening to a classic 1977 vinyl LP by Jackie Daly and Seamus Creagh, he went out and bought his first melodeon, a Hohner Black Dot Double Ray, and so began his lifelong journey into traditional music.

The album features 14 tracks with guests including Kevin Burke, Seamus McGuire, Bill Verdier, Teresa Baker, Billy Oskay, Gerry Whelan, Vince Burns, Francis Cunningham, Kathy Fallon and Myron Bretholz.

The album can now be purchased from www.claddaghrecords.com in Europe or www.ossianusa.com in North America.
