Caledonia is the sixth album released by the California-based band, Dannsair. They describe it as “Celtic Fusion at its best - a vision of folk music that embraces growth over insularity. Incorporating inspiration from theater, dance, old style sean-nos singing, blues, and jazz, and from countries as diverse as Belgium, Ireland, Scotland, America, and England, the new album uses World Folk Music as its starting point and branches out from there.

Russell Doherty, the founder and band leader, describes the music of Dannsair: “Some call it Celtic Fusion, some World Music, some Folk Music gone viral. But whatever the phrase is, it is still the same musical outreach: the Future of Traditional Music. And the future is constantly expanding its horizons. Martin Hayes says it is all about accommodating everyone who is interested in this crazy old music which has become so vital to so many people. We can’t live without it; we can’t stop it from growing and becoming something that is bigger than any of us.”

This is track 1 from the album called Can’t Get You Out of My Mind.

This year Russell and the band spent two weeks in Ireland visiting a number of festivals. This included the Kilkenny Arts Festival and the Bantry Masters of Tradition Festival where they watched Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill play music with a wide variety of different musicians. “They played one night with Jordi Savall, the Renaissance Viol player; another with Brooklyn Rider, the NY-based classical string quartet; and still another with the musicians from their last CD, The Gloaming, a mash-up of Celtic and New York City jazz musicians, including a bass clarinetist, a pianist and a modern tap dancer. All of the concerts were incredible, all were completely different.”

Russell says that “one of the musical points that Martin continually emphasizes is the universality of this music and how it can encompass so many different styles of music under its umbrella. In that same vein, Dannsair’s latest CD, Caledonia, is an exploration in how versatile music in the Celtic Fusion genre can be. From the jazz infused Can’t Get You Out of My Mind, which we include above, to the traditional Wedding Reel set, the members of Dannsair have crafted an enticing musical journey through Europe and it’s varying traditional and contemporary musical genres.”

“On this CD a number of new musicians joined us: Whitney Kaufman on vocals, Jay Galvin on vocals and guitar, Adriane Hill on flute and Lorenzo Martinez on percussion. All the musicians gave major contributions: new, old, guest artists, Dannsair alumni. Wonderfully collaborative songwriting and performing, lots of great ideas, and the addition of a new studio: ATD Productions. This CD would not have been possible without Dom Camardella and Tom Donnelly. Life, and Celtic music, is good.”

Russell says that the songs on the album took the better part of two years to work out: lyrics, melodies, rhythms and recording. Everyone contributed good ideas and the band then edited them together. “I myself have written over 300 songs” he says. “The strength of the material is the culmination of the band being together for so long. I believe the longevity of the band is a factor of my being a musician since I was seven years old. In the decades I have been a band leader, I have found that everyone needs not only respect, but a place to shine and contribute. Each musician can then show their strengths and make the whole band larger than the sum of its parts.”
