Album Review - Breanndán Ó Beaglaoich / Seana Choirce

Seana Choirce is the first CD release of Breanndán’s debut solo album on the Gael Linn label dating from 1987. It has been re-mastered from the recording tapes to a level that would match present day standards. It captures an early glimpse of Breanndán playing the beautiful music of West Kerry. He was born as we know into a very musical family and was the youngest of nine children. I saw him live recently in concert and you can't help but be captivated by his music and songs.  As is fitting for a Kerry musician, the slides, polkas and songs of West Kerry dominated proceedings.  The same applies on this recording.

Of the 15 tracks there is only one set of jigs and one set of reels with slow airs, hornpipes and those slides and polkas very much to the fore. The majority are also played in unusual keys including C# and F#.  His sensitive playing of slow airs has over the years received much comment and it is evident here as well.  Praise must go to Gael Linn for the re-release of these early recordings.  They provide a great reference point for the development of the music and while some are specialist in nature they are still invigorating to hear. Once you see Breanndán or any of the Sliabh Luachra musicians deliver a concert of this music you will appreciate even more the early recordings.
