Traditional Irish Music
The 5th Annual Clifden Traditional Music Festival will take place this year from the 10th – 13th April in Clifden, Connemara, Co. Galway. The Festival will begin on Thursday 10th April this year with a CD Launch in the Alcock and Brown Hotel at 8pm. The CD entitled “Rewind” is a new CD by Connemara Piper, Fiachra O Regan, Sophie Lavoie, Jimmy Higgins and Michael McCague
Friday will see the Official Opening and Concert in the Clifden Station House Hotel at 7pm. As always the event is free and will feature a host of artists from all over Ireland . The festival will be officially opened this year by head of music at Raidio na Gaeltachta, Neansai Ni Choistealdbha.
Saturday starts with music workshops in Fiddle, Button Accordion, Banjo and Concertina from 10am until 12.30pm in Clifden Community school with a youth session afterwards in O Malleys Bar. A Sean Nos Dancing workshop will also take place with teacher Gearoid Devane in Clifden Town Hall at 2.30pm.
Music Sessions are a very big part of the festival and again this year feature a host of champion musicians from all over Ireland. Musicians will include: Laura Beagon(Fiddle) from Monaghan, James Duggan(Fiddle), Maura Walsh(Concertina) and Graham Guerin(Accordion) from Kerry, Michael Curran(Tyrone) and Daithi Gormley(Sligo) both on accordion, husband and wife duo Lorna and Brian Fitzgerald from Limerick, members of the Border Collies Group Theresa and Declan Payne, The Broderick Family from Corofin and a whole host more musicians. Great dancers and singers will also be seen in the sessions over the weekend including All Ireland Champion singer Cian Kearins from Sligo and dancers including Gearoid Devane(Sean Nós Dancer) and Candian Clog Dancer Nathan Pilatzke.
The Sessions will take place as follows: Friday 11th April at 10pm: EJ Kings Bar and Lowrys Bar. Saturday 12th April: 2pm – Tom Kings Bar, 4pm – Mannions Bar, Saturday night: 10pm: O’Malleys Bar and The Central Bar 9.30 – 11.30: Guys Bar. The “Farewell Session” will be in Foyles Hotel at 12.30.
A big highlight of the festival this year will be the “Return of the Dartry” . Following on from their great performance in 2012, The Dartry Ceili Band returns to Clifden Trad Fest to perform the Outdoor Gig on the Saturday night of the festival at 7.30pm on the Gig Rig on Market Square. It’s sure to be an electric performance and one for all to enjoy. They will be joined by a host of dancers and guest artists.
A few events have been added onto the Trad Fest this year. On the Saturday of the festival , A Vintage Car Run will come to town featuring about 20 vintage cars. There will be Street Entertainment around the town with stilt walkers, face painters, jugglers etc and a Traditional Street Market will also return this year featuring a host of stalls on the square . Another new addition to the festival this year will be a CD Launch on the Sunday evening with a new CD from this years All Ireland Senior Concertina Champion Roisin Broderick and Noel Battle(7 times Mouth Organ Champion). They will launch their new CD “Up and About in the Morning” in The Central Bar at 6pm.
