Traditional Irish Music
This is the first track from the new Shannon Vale Céilí Band album called Shannon’s Lovely Vale. The set begins with ‘Molly Bawn’, which was first published in Ryan’s Mammoth Collection and is associated with the East Galway flute player Paddy Carty (1929-1980). The second tune also appears in the same collection as ‘My Love is on the Ocean’. In Connemara, on the west coast of Co. Galway it is also known as ‘Joe Mháire Mhicilín’.
The original band was formed in Ballyduff in 1960 by Dr. Mick Sweeney. Following the revival of the Shannon Vale by leader Danny O’ Mahony in 2009, they have since achieved huge success including winning the coveted title of All-Ireland Senior Céilí Band Champions at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, Cavan in 2011.
The present line up includes Sheila Garry and Colm Kissane on fiddles, Marianne Browne on flute, Joe O’ Sullivan on flute and vocals. Mike Collins features on banjo, John Collins provides percussion on drums and Patsy Broderick, formerly of Arcady, features on piano and Danny O’ Mahony on accordion.
The title track Shannon’s Lovely Vale was written by Maurice Lennon and appears on the final track on the album with two other Lennon compositions called Master Shanley’s and The Road to Garrison.
