Traditional Irish Music
For fans of Solas you can catch them on the second part of their Irish tour at the moment where they are getting great reviews. This tour celebrates their latest recording Shamrock City which has a great story behind it.
"This project is somewhat of a milestone for us. It marks the first time in our 15 year history that we are making an album without the support of a record label. We do this with a great deal of excitement and maybe just a twinge of trepidation. But we are thrilled to embark on this next chapter with a project near and dear to our hearts.
What began as a story from Seamus' family has grown into a music and film project. It tells the story of Butte, MT, a copper mining town at the turn of the 20th century as seen through the eyes of an Irish immigrant, Michael Conway who was a great uncle of Seamus' father. In 1910 he sailed from Cobh, Co. Cork in Ireland to Philadelphia. Six years later, having made his way to Butte, MT to work in the copper mines, he was dead.
His journey was like that of many and it led us to discover how the people of Butte with their independent spirit, humor, strength, and ambition helped build the backbone of industrialized America. Although people from all over the world flocked to Butte to make their fortunes, it was especially welcoming to the Irish and soon became known as Shamrock City.
Inspired by these stories we're now hard at work writing the music and songs for the album. The Shamrock City project has three parts - the CD, the DVD and the live show visuals. The recording and mixing of the CD will take place over the next couple of months in Philadelphia, PA.
For the DVD we will make our own journey to Butte where we will film the band performing the music from Shamrock City live at various locations. We have a fantastic team together for the filming and new friends in Butte helping us discover the mining landscape. We're very excited about capturing the music we've created on location in Butte and fascinated to bring the past and the present together through our music. This footage will also be incorporated into our live show for our 2012 / 2013 tour, bringing the new music with both archive and new visuals directly to our audience.
So, we have a lot of work ahead of us and we need your help to make this happen! Your contribution is greatly appreciated and will help us shine a light on a significant yet little known period of America's past. We'll keep you up to date every step of the way.
