Traditional Irish Music
On Saturday 16th June, as part of Cork Midsummer Festival, Live at St. Luke’s will host an evening of ‘Fair Plé’, a new initiative which aims to achieve gender balance in the production, performance, promotion and development of Irish traditional and folk music, featuring the incredible talents of Karen Casey, Pauline Scanlon, The Whileaways, Kate Ellis, Stephanie Rainey, Robbie Overson, Anna Mieke, Julie Goo, Niall Vallely, Mary Mitchell Ingoldsby, Máire Ní Ghrada, Maeve Donnolly and Rosaleen O’Leary.
The initiative was set up by two inspirational women: Karan Casey - the renowned singer who started out with Solas in the mid 90’s and has since collaborated with artists such as Bela Fleck, Lunasa, The Dubliners and Imelda May; and Pauline Scanlon – who featured as a vocalist with the Sharon Shannon Band for three years, as a solo artist, and as a member of vocal duo LUMIERE, Pauline has entranced audiences the world over with her distinctly delicate intensity.
Speaking about the initiative, Karan commented: “I have been performing for over twenty-five years, hence it is my great pleasure to create, alongside many talented and extraordinary women and men, this campaign called FairPlé, for equality for female performers in Irish traditional and folk music. While I have had an enriched, privileged and deeply creative life in singing I have long been harbouring the feeling that women performers are not being honoured and listened to in this workplace. Fairplé grew out of many conversations that people were having backstage. So we decided to start speaking out about the unfairness and inequality that performing females face in this environment. This movement is now growing every day and we have decided to form a working group to fight for fairness for female performers in the workplace.”
Celebrate the talents of the great women performers of Irish Traditional folk and trad music, in the striking surroundings of the former church, Live at St. Luke’s, Saturday 16th June, as part of the Cork Midsummer Festival. Tickets €20 plus booking fee are available from uticket.ie, Henchy’s Bar, and Pro Musica Oliver Plunkett Street.
