Traditional Irish Music
The Harcourt Sessions have a great line up for their gig on Monday 16th April at 9pm with Steve Cooney and Brendan Begley who are an act always worth watching. To add to this you will also have the pleasure of Jack Talty and Cormac Begley on concertina and what a treat that will be. We raved on about their album Na Fir Bolg which is now our album of the month so it will be great to see it live.
Born into a musical family, the youngest of nine children, Breanndán Ó Beaghlaoich soaked up the music and song of West Kerry from an early age. Slides, polkas, songs and slow airs all run through his veins. He has three acclaimed solo albums to his name, as well as numerous recordings with the groups Boys of the Lough and Beginish. More recently he has been joined in performances by his family, comprising sons Bréanainn (Guitar), Cormac (Concertina), Conchubhair (Accordion) and daughter Cliodhna (Fiddle and sean-nós dancing), carrying on the long line of music from Corca Dhuibhne and the Begley family. He has toured extensively and recorded with Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh.
Born in Melbourne, Australia, Steve started his professional musical career at the age of 17, playing for a while in the US before returning home, where he was in a number of rock bands, (Bushwackers, Fruitcake) and the successful folk/rock band, Red Gum. In 1981 he bought a one-way ticket to Ireland, from where his ancestors had come, where he busked and worked odd jobs for a few months, before joining Stockton's Wing as bassist with whom he stayed until 1981. Since then he has popped up all over the place, with a major contribution to Sharon Shannon's first album, and performances and recordings with Dermot Byrne, Altan, Martin Hayes, Seamus Begley and others. While guitar, and rock guitarists have raised eyebrows in trad Irish music in the past, Cooney is no noise machine. His technique is excellent, and his understanding of traditional music and accompaniment is attested to by the number of traditional groups and albums he has contributed to.
