Traditional Irish Music
With their sound being described as innovative and highly energetic it’s not hard to see why Blás are being described as one of the must see bands to come out of Ireland in recent times. They are newly formed and are presently promoting their self titled debut album. The band consists of Stephen Doherty on flutes, accordion and percussion, David Doocey on fiddle, Anne Brennan on vocals and Shane McGowan on guitars.
We have covered the music of David Doocey and his Changing Time release back in 2013 and together with his fellow group members they have toured, performed and recorded with a who's who of artists including Sharon Shannon, Sean and Dolores Keane, Lúnasa, Gráda, Tim O’Brien, Paul Brady, Zakir Hussain, Dave Munnelly, Emmylou Harris, Joan Baez and Robert Plant among countless others. This debut album has received critical acclaim with a rich and interesting mix of beautiful songs coupled with traditional and newly composed music.
We spoke to David Doocey about the group. “We've been playing together in different lineups for many years” he said. “We're all living in the West with Anne living in Westport, Shane living just over the border in Tubbercurry, county Sligo and Stephen and myself living in Foxford so inevitably our paths would cross a lot. About two and a half years ago we put the group together and then we were asked to do a tour of Germany which included 35 dates. That, in turn gave us the impetus to record the album. The recording took place between Sligo and Foxford in late 2015 and was all self recorded.”
This is track 5 from the album.
“Our music has been described as authentic, fresh and exciting” David says.. The album contains mainly newly composed music from Stephen and myself with one of the tunes being written by Shane, Stephen and myself. The songs were picked by Anne who has a great ear for music that can resonate with listeners, and work in a live context. The word versatile has been used a lot at our gigs to describe our sound. Shane, Stephen and Anne are all extremely versatile at what they do so switching styles be it from doing a song in the Irish language to doing a cover of a Beatles song all comes very easy to them on stage which is great in a live setting.”
“After the 35 date German tour we performed some gigs around Ireland. We performed to over 1.3 million people live on FleadhTv at the Fleadh in Ennis this summer.”
We were also asked to perform in Croke Park last year for the All-Ireland Football Finals. More recently we played at the Trip to Birmingham TradFest in November. More dates for 2018 will be announced shortly.
