The show will in their own words will be "A momentous sean-nós project" featuring Iarla Ó Lionáird and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. Distinguished international and Irish composers are working on a fascinating project - the reimaging and reinvigoration of traditional sean-nós songs - in effect, The Great Irish Songbook.

Drawing on a myriad of unique influences, eminent international and home-grown composers like NICO MUHLY, DAVID LANG, DAN TRUEMAN, MÍCHEÁL Ó SÚILLEABHÁIN, NIALL VALLELY, DONNACHA DENNEHY and BENEDICT SCHLEPPER-CONNOLLY are taking these ancient sean-nós songs and creating new arrangements. The results will be brought to life by Iarla Ó Lionáird and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in this landmark concert.

Having established himself both as a master of sean-nós and a pioneer in its renewal, Iarla Ó Lionáird is one of Ireland's most striking voices. He continually stretches the boundaries, working with orchestras, traditional groups and the twice-Grammy-nominated, multi-million-selling Afro Celt Sound System.

It was a great concert - very grateful for the tickets. And thank you to Carol for the information about Wilde.

This full-length concert with the RTE Concert Orchestra earned a standing ovation.

Mr O' Lionaird looked spiffing, and gracious as ever. He included one of his most well-known renditions, that of 'Táimse Im Chodladh', which was a highlight for me. Oscar Wilde used to have it sung to him, and in turn sang it to his children, I discovered when doing some research a while back.

Setting sean nós songs, originally performed without or with very minimal accompaniment, in these multi-layered productions did lead to some very interesting and varied results. Mícheál O Súilleabháin was possibly the most expert arranger in incorporating classical flourishes now commonly associated with Irish music. All participants' results worked, and I was taken with the unusual echoes and chords that evoked the rich nuances of this type of music used in Dan Trueman's arrangements.

Iarla provided occasional background information and referred to his grand-aunt Elizabeth Cronin, an exponent of this genre. A couple of numbers he covered can be heard sung by her in a fascinating archive of folk music recordings, mainly organised by Alan Lomax.

All in all, the rare drop. Most grateful indeed; míle beannacht! : ) c
