I remember a conversation my dad had with someone a few years back. My dad has been teaching sean nós in Dublin for years and this other guy (who never attempted to teach anyone) was adamant that Irish singing couldn't be taught to someone not of the Gaeltacht. Needless to say it irked my dad a fair bit.

Well in answer to that I was in France recently giving lessons to a group of French singers at the Tocane St. Apre Irish music festival. I asked them what they would like to focus on and to my surprise, out of all the samples I demonstrated, they chose some very difficult sean nós pieces - amongst others. And they rose to it brilliantly.

Not only that but we also arranged a song with lyrics in Old-Irish, Scred Ceann Sualtaim. The result was fantastic - compelling and exciting. This video speaks for itself
