Hi Guys,

You are welcome to start up an Antrim group. Maybe you guys can lead the way and show how it is done. I didnt want to open up the groups just yet as i felt the membership numbers needed to be higher. I didnt want a dozen groups with 2 members etc. So start away. Thats what its there for. The more the merrier etc. Controls are turned on Dick. Away you go. T

Hello Brian,

Good to hear from you.

As far as our Monday night session goes, I'd say it'd probably be ideal for someone like yourself.

For example, it's not one of those survival of the fittest / keep up, or keep out jobs, which can be very intimidating for newcomers to the session.

With us, everyone gets their fare share of opportunity to start sets of tunes at their own pace & we have a nice variety of instruments, including Fiddles, Flute, Whistle, Harp, Scottish Smallpipes, Hammered Dulcimer & Concertina. We play a mix of Irish & Scottish tunes, which we feel is only natural, given our geographic location.

Others have already joined us on Guitar, Flute & Bodhran & hopefully with the holiday season now upon us, we'll see a few passing musicians join us, during the next couple of months.

On the other hand, we run from 10.30pm till 12.30am, so if you don't live nearby, it might not be too handy.

Last night we were joined by a father & daughter. He sang us a ballad & she played Flute & Whistle.

As for sessions further south, I'm afraid I don't get to any of them, so I'm unable to give you any 1st hand info on any of them.

Perhaps, once we are able to start groups here, we can launch a Co. Antrim group & so promote the local sessions with up to date info & keep in touch with each other, with ease.

Hi Dick,
I am a keen bouzouki/mandolin player from the Mid-Ulster area. I have been practicing solo for a few years now & am keen to start going to a few sessions but am unsure where to go. I have been to a few at a nearby pub which I really enjoyed but it is really mostly songs with the odd tune & I definitely am not a singer! I have tried a few further afield but found them quite intimidating! I used to live in Portstewert & had many a memorable & not so memorable night in the Anchor!
Is the session on a Monday night suitable for a relative newcomer or could you recommend any alternatives?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Thanks Jim.

Last week we were also joined by a Whistle player, a lady came over & sang a song for us & another bloke bought us all a drink.

So if we keep getting such a good reaction from folks, I just hope the owner will run with it all year round.

Happy to report that the first session went very well.

We 4 were joined by one local musician who played Fiddle & Guitar.

Owner reckons there were double the normal number of punters in on the night, so .... fingers crossed.
