Norah Rendell has just released a sample track from her forthcoming album Spinning Yarns. The track is called St.Patrick's Day and is released to celebrate both our annual festival and this new album release. A recent press release states that she is "Known for her work with cutting-edge, multi-national ensemble The Outside Track, Rendell is poised to release a full solo album on March 26, 2015. Featuring songs collected from across Canada, the music of Spinning Yarns draws from living Irish, Scottish, English traditions and features age-old stories of love and loss.
"The traditional song "St. Patrick's Day" comes from the singing of Cyril O'Brien of Trepassey, Newfoundland. Rendell's musical partner Brian Miller tells the story of the song's collection in the liner notes: "MacEdward Leach was the first song collector to bring recording equipment to Newfoundland. The recordings he made in small fishing villages around the Avalon Peninsula are a largely untapped treasure trove of beautiful songs with close ties to the Irish tradition in which their singers were steeped."
