Traditional Irish Music
It has been a very hectic year for Niamh and her band, no less so than on her recent tour of Germany. In 19 days, the Niamh Ní Charra Band played 16 concerts all over Germany, even crossing the border in to Saverne, France, and covered over 5,000kms. They performed to packed houses and regularly finished the concerts with encore after encore. It was a fantastic tour and they were delighted with the fantastic reception they received in every single venue. An equally intense tour is currently being planned for October 2014, with tickets on sale for several concerts already. The tour ended on an incredibly high note with a performance as one of only a handful of nominated bands in the Eiserner Eversteiner Preis - the only Folk award in Germany. This performance along with those by 7 other bands will be judged over the coming weeks, and following both public and critics votes a winner will be selected. To be one of 8 bands chosen from 89 in total is already a fantastic honour, but we will be keeping our fingers crossed!
Suantraí na hInise - The Island Lullaby
The World Premiére of newly composed music entitled Suantraí na hInise / Island Lullaby took place at The Blasket Centre, Co. Kerry on November 17th. Composed by Colm Ó Foghlú, and featuring Niamh Ní Charra (concertina), Noreen O’Donoghue (harp), and the Dublin String Ensemble, it has been written to commemorate the anniversary of the evacuation of the Blasket Islands, which took place on that same date 60 years previously. Along with the newly composed music, the evening featured archive audio visual material including footage from the Blaskets and interviews with some of the islanders. The evening was a resounding success and plans are now being made to record this beautiful music, and to perform in other venues during this anniversary year. Visit www.niamhnicharra.com
