Traditional Irish Music
Its been an eventful 2011 so far to say the least!
The year kicked off with intensive practicing, arranging, composing and recording for and exiting new fiddle based band project entitled "The Strideset" which is headed up by Trish Clarke and Meabh O Hare.
My role has been putting the guitar and bouzouki rhythm and riff ideas to the colouful tunes of the band!.....its going great so far and we have a 4 track demo just out of the mixing stage for all the promoters out there!
We are going into the studio for a week at the end of June to put down all the rest of the tracks for what promises to be an exciting new sound in Irish music. We have an extaordinary exponent of all the eastern european slavic music in the band too (Jani Lang) so be prepared for some interesting sounds and tunes! :)
We debuted the band at the Feile An Earraigh festival in Belfast in february as support for Capercaille to a rapturous reception.
Then it was off to Europe with At First Light for a mini St Patricks weekend trip involving concerts to sell out crowds in Florence and Paris. Quality gigs and some late nights!! Thanks Paul :)
Nice to get the reast and break from that!!, only to be landed with 18 tracks to work up for my brother Dona'ls upcoming debut fiddle album! so that was a workload to say the least.......soem very interesting fiddle tunes, tempos, key modulations and lovely unheard of tunes in this new album!
So, over the Easter Holidays in April, I travelled to Dublin to Dave Sheridan's studio to put down some sounds.!
2 and a 1/2 days and 15 tracks later, hey presto, and all guitar, bouzouki and tenor guitar accompaniement and arrangement tracks down....Brian Mc Grath, piano man, then drafted in to put the big sounds around some tracks and the album is ready for mixing in June!
Thats going to be a big job and looking forward to that new experience for me.
Going to be a top fiddle album. Watch out for it in Early Autumn!!
Then,an " At First Light" recording sesssion this week putting down some groovy sounds for their mighty tunes and songs, and a great learning experience for me to be in a studio environment with greats of irish music and seasoned recording heads John Mc Sherry and Donal O Connor. Great guys to allay ones fears and confidence issues in that pressure environment!
That's gonna be a top album, and pleasuable to be any way involved in.
Now for some relaxation and Champions league final tonight. Hopefully gigs does the honours!
