Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal - Friday 3rd February 2017

Peadar Ó Riada has announced details of this years Gold Medal competition. It forms part of his "Cuireadh Chun Ceoil” radio show which  is broadcast on RnaG nationwide and via the Web, every Friday night. The program previews new releases, plays music from old recordings as well as the current readily available albums. The program maintains a continuous dialogue with listeners via its website and the internet.

Regarding this year’s Gold Medal Peadar said: "A trad Irish music competition for the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal and a €2,500 purse is held on the program every year. Any and every musician from any place, creed, age or race around the world, may enter without cost. The competition runs on a 4 year cycle – fidil, flutes (flute/tin-whistle), harp and pipes, box and concertina and then back again to fidil etc. We have had competitors from Ireland, Scotland, England, France, Switzerland, Finland, Russia, Japan, Australia, Canada, America and so on. This year we will have to give out two gold medals and two purses for the harp and pipes.”

On his aspirations for this years music weekend he said: “We would really like to grow the weekend as a kind of busman’s holiday for musicians, singers, publishers, broadcasters, techies etc who are trying to earn a living from Irish music. So it is directed at them rather than on drawing a crowd. The competition is on the Friday - live on RnaG 7.00 - 9:00pm and there is a big session afterwards where all join in until Johnny calls a halt.”

“It will also stream live on our website. The Saturday afternoon is the business end where we gather to listen to and question people from all the organisations mentioned. Last year the hot topic was US visas and their cost as well as the application system for Arts Council grants, purses etc. Catherine Boothman was speaking on behalf of the Arts Council and made several further visits during the summer which solved a lot of issues. She will also attend this year”.

Comhaltas are also represented, as are Gael Linn who will be talking about publishing and IMRO who will talk about royalties and how to claim them. They will also be asking people to fill out a questionnaire to learn what people are looking for, and what direction they would like Peadar and his team to go in 2018.

The Gold Concert (Saturday night) is free to all and is a kind of standard setting event in that only Gold Medal Winners can take to the stage.”
