Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal - Friday 7th February 2014

Fifteen traditional musicians will take to the stage in the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork on 7 February at 7 pm to compete in the final for the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal.  The event will be broadcast live on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, and also webcast on www.cuireadhchunceoil.ie .

This year’s competition focuses on accordion, concertina and mouth organ, and so little wonder, perhaps, that Munster is so strongly represented in the finalists who include five musicians from Clare, four from Kerry, two from Tipperary, one from Cork, one from Meath, one from Dublin, and one from California, ranging in age from twelve to fifty something!

A special note of good luck to Tradconnect member Keelan McGrath from Co. Tipperary who has been a member on here for quite a while.

This year’s competition will be judged by master musicians Charlie Harris, Mick Mulcahy and Noel Hill.  The winner of the competition will receive the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal and €2000.

For those interested in attending the competition, the Rochestown Park is offering a special rate of €50 for B&B and entry to the competition.  Contact the hotel directly on 021 4890800.

The competition is sponsored by RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, Iontaobhas Fódhla, Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Gael Linn and The Rochestown Park Hotel.

The final will be live on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta 92-94 fm, or online www.rte.ie/rnag Live webcast on www.cuireadhchunceoil.ie
