Sligo Live to work in partnership with Cambridge Folk Festival 27th - 31st July 2016

In an imaginative marketing initiative to promote music on the Wild Atlantic Way,Sligo Live is proud to bring 6 of Ireland’s most talented and accomplished young traditional musicians to Cambridge Folk Festival 2016, where they will entertain festivalgoers with open ‘Sessions’ each afternoon and following the main stage performances.  Cambridge Folk Festival is one of the longest running and most famous folk festivals in the world.

This initiative drew the support of Tourism Ireland, who are keen to introduce the rich music and culture of Sligo and The Wild Atlantic Way which is described as one of the wildest, most enchanting and culturally rich coastal touring routes in the world.

The ‘Session’ is at the heart of Irish Traditional music, and at Cambridge Folk Festival this year, performers and musicians are encouraged to join in with Tiernan Courell(Flute), Richie Delahunty (Banjo and Guitar), Áine Duffy (Concertina), Nell Kelly(Fiddle), Donal Linehan (Accordion) and Conal McCormack (Bodhran) – who will be leading off with music that captures the emotion and beauty of Sligo’s Wild Atlantic Coast.

Cambridge Folk Festival Director, Eddie Barcan, expressed his delight in adding this additional feature to the festival; “One of the most endearing features of Cambridge Folk Festival has been the informal jam sessions around the main programme, often continuing into the early mornings. Together with Sligo Live, we thought of taking the informal Irish session to Cambridge as an anchor for jam sessions in the festival bars and cafes.”

Ireland is well known for its music, but the West coast, and in particular, Sligo, is a real hotbed. Often referred to as ‘Music City Sligo’, it hosts a variety of music all year round which culminates in Sligo Live from 26th to 31st October with 100 indoor gigs in a compact atmospheric area.
