Song of the Week : Bernadette Morris / Once I Loved

This song is taken from the Bernadette Morris album All the Ways you Wander.  The title of the album comes from a composition by John Spillane, which Bernadette includes on the album.  She recorded some sparklingly good material and brought on board a great team of musicians to play with her on the album. This featured song is called Once I Loved

"I had been talking about making the album that this song is taken from for a long time for a long time, and when I first thought about it and talked through my imagined list of songs to Dónal Lunny, who I was working with at the time, he advise me to go looking for some older and 'lesser heard of songs.' He gave me a few albums to have a listen to including a couple of Frank Harte albums and the album 'Once I Loved' by Sarah and Rita Keane. The title song of the album jumped out of me as a song of heartbreak and lost love, and when I heard Christi O'Leary of 'The Boys of the Lough' singing it in some old archive from Belfast Festival at Queens and found the lyrics and extra verses in the Cathal McDonnell book I decided it was another one for the list."
