Songs # 26- 30 - Songwriter Showcase with Christy Moore

This Songwriters Showcase is a new collaboration with the legendary Christy Moore.  Providing an outlet for composers and writers is an essential goal of Tradconnect and it is hoped that this showcase will highlight some great new writers and performers. We are honored to have Christy listening to this material and giving his support.

Other recording artists that follow this campaign may pick up on some of this new material and possibly record it. Submitted songs must be in the folk and ballad tradition.  Songs should be presented a cappella or with as little as possible in the way of background accompaniment.  The use of a single instrument such as guitar or piano would be preferable to full band backing.

Christy Moore for his part, is excited by the prospect of discovering some great new material and will be listening to all the submissions.  He has also kindly offered an award of €500 for a song and writer that stands out.  While we have a desire to uncover songs that deal with "modern day emigration" we will accept all songs in the folk and ballad tradition as set out in the link below.

To submit a song read this article where we set out some basic guidelines.  A closing date for entries has not yet been set, so check back for updates.

Song #26 - Tony Reidy / Devilment (Dancing Down in Toureen)
Here is link to my song Devilment (They are dancing down in Tooreen).  It's the story of the devils appearance at a dancehall in Tooreen, Co. Mayo in the sixties.! Many reasons were given including a devious rival dance hall owner ! Hope you like it.

The song 'Maid of the Isle' reached the final ten in the Christy Hennessey songwriting competition in 2013. The song 'The Emigrant' reached the final of the Allingham Song Competition in November of the same year. The Astronauts will be playing live and recording more songs in the near future. Song #28 - Izzy Ryder / Paddy McGann
Izzy Ryder is a singer-songwriter based in Liverpool, UK. She plays acoustic and electric guitar and piano, enjoying Irish traditional session music and also jazz. She wrote the song "Paddy McGann" after visiting her Gran, who told her about this character from the time when she was a young woman.

Song #29 - Ray Flannery / Old Man

This is a song of mine called Old Man. I am a singer/ songwriter originally from Banagher, Co Offaly. I am now living in Malahide, Co Dublin. I have previously written  a song that qualified for the Cavan Song contest. I am now playing with a group called Scarecrow Union in Dublin. We supported Doolin at Malahide festival earlier this summer.
I wrote this song after watching a very old man sitting on a bench overlooking Malahide harbour.  He just stared into space as life went on around him. People walked past him discussing whatever and nobody gave him a second glance. I started to wonder about his past, his future, his life, all he has seen and some of what he has forgotten.
Song #30 - Eugene McGrath / Back on the Ten
My name is Eugene McGrath, and I am a songwriter based in Sligo. My day job as a Quantity Surveyor helps pay the bills but music is what I enjoy more than anything else.  I have been playing guitar for ten years or so and recently began songwriting. I also enjoy building guitars, including the one used in
the recording. I was inspired to write the song "Back on the Ten" after watching the Clint Eastwood film, "Unforgiven" which deals with similar theme's as my song. Hope you Enjoy!
